An update from the field

Posted 5/21/2012 12:29pm by Joshua & Ashley Frost.

Here we are already at the end of May.  These past few weeks have been really just perfect.  We have had some nice warm days and some days of nice steady rain each week.  The temps are seemingly high for May but we will take it!! Our gardens are looking great.

We were even able to open the farm stand 1 month early this year!  Our first day open was May 5th.  We were so excited to see all of our returning customers as well as new ones!!  With this past weekend full of graduations, we decided to not be open, but we will be open Saturday, May 26th with our modified hours and then start the first week of June with our regular hours.

Our Maple Syrup has been a huge hit, as expected.  We are so excited to share this new product with you!!

In the field- we have lots growing!  Our potatoes are up and ready for their first hilling.  Our second and third seedings of beets and carrots are looking great.  Our first planting of chard and kale are ready to harvest! We have been harvesting head lettuce, leaf lettuce and arugula for the last month.  Our radishes are about a week away from being harvested.  Our cut flowers have been transplanted out into the field along with our eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. Our summer squash, cucumbers and string beans have all been direct seeded.  Our irrigation has been all set up, even though we have not needed to use it, other than when we are transplanting.  Our greenhouse tomatoes are looking AWESOME!! We have LOTS of fruit and expect our cherry tomatoes in the next few weeks and our slicing/heirloom tomatoes in the next 3-4 weeks.  The plants are taller than me and are getting harder to tie up!  We have planted our second planting of tomatoes and basil in the greenhouse and are hoping to have them ready for harvest mid-late July.  Our garlic had a rough spring because it was so dry, but with our irrigation and now all of this rain that we have had it’s made a nice come-back.

We were given 19 chicks from an elementary class from West Patent this past week.  They are now 13 days old and growing fast!  We have them in Patterson for now and in a few weeks they will be brought back down to Tanrackin Farm once they have all of their feathers and are big enough to be put in a larger pen.

We are excited to see you guys this weekend!!  We will have lots for you to supply your Memorial Day BBQ’s!!
